Christopher Barteau

Business, real estate and energy attorney with both law firm and in-house experience leading and counseling clients on a variety of transactions with an emphasis on the organization, capitalization, purchase and sale of companies, including private placements and private equity investments; purchase, sale, financing, development and leasing of multifamily, industrial, office and mixed-use projects, including the negotiation of joint ventures, revolving credit and construction loans, construction contracts; and other business transactions, including distribution, warehousing and transportation matters, selection, formation and governance of various entities with different classes of equity, voting and profits interests.

I previously served as in-house counsel for a highly regarded private real estate development and management company specializing in high quality multifamily and mixed-use projects nationwide. Before that I served as the lead real estate development and construction lawyer for a large automotive repair company with over 200 franchises across the country. In those in-house roles, I managed a large volume of transactions, serving on leadership teams overseeing strategic initiatives for the company and working closely with company executives and board members to secure debt and equity financing, and negotiate and implement standard agreements for programmatic purchases, sales, construction loans and development projects. I have also counseled clients in a variety of other industries, including construction (at both the general and subcontractor levels), oil and gas exploration and production, oilfield services, health care, food service, warehousing and transportation.

Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Whitney, our two sons, Harris and Thomas, and our golden retriever, Jefe. I love coaching my sons’ baseball teams and playing golf and pickleball.

At South Texas College of Law, I served on the South Texas Law Review and earned a J.D., cum laude, with a Transactional Law Practice Certificate. During law school, I worked full-time as a petroleum landman and took classes at night.
